Spotify Playlist Sharing: A (Short) Anthropological Study
What it really means when you ask to share someone’s Spotify playlist….
Spotify playlists showcase the essence of your being. Okay, a bit dramatic, but hear me out. They are literally an auditory compilation of everything that your body enjoys hearing for one reason or another. You find it satisfying or sexy or entertaining or maybe it makes your toe tap under the table or it brings a warm smile to your face or maybe it’s so overly dramatic that it quite literally brings you to tears a la movie soundtracks.
Playlists are the auditory key to your heart. You’re basically guaranteed to have some sort of involuntary physical or emotional reaction to anything coming out of those speakers if your personally curated playlist is playing.
Want to get to know what makes someone tick? Listen to their Spotify playlist, ideally before the first date.
Is it all Indy and far from mainstream? Are they actually into it, or are they one of those bored rich boys who’s just discovered it?
Only classical? Are you concerned they might be a yawn in bed? Or maybe they could quite literally play you like a delicate fiddle until your eyes damn near crossed?
Metal? God save your ears.
Broadway show tunes? [Insert obvious self explanatory visual here.] Hope for your sake you’re either super into it or have a strong set of earplugs and a tolerance for impromptu tap dance routines and bursts of song over dinner.
Only Top 20? Probably basic. But potentially basic in a super down to earth and just listens to what they listen to from the radio kind of person. Also potentially one of those crazies who goes to clubs and shit and wears sunglasses indoors because the sun never sets on badass basic.
So… what does it all mean? What does it mean if, knowing the above, someone asks you to share their playlist with you?
It means your music moves them, which to be honest is a pretty freaking special thing.
There is just so. much. damn. music out there these days. The odds that what’s coming out of your speaker is special enough that they want more is pretty dope.
